The number of Olympic Games sports has grown from nine at the first Olympic Games in 1896, to 33 contested at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, with more sports always keen to get onto this exclusive list. Here's the list of new sports which will be included in 2024 Paris Olympics.
1: Olympic skateboarding
Skateboarding is one of the new Olympic sports of Paris 2024. In 2016, it was announced that it would become a new Olympic sport in 2020, in Tokyo. The IOC, the governing body of the Olympic Games, saw great interest from youth in this sport. Therefore, the board decided that it would become an official new Olympic sport. So Olympic skateboarding will be on the program in Paris and will comprise several events. Of course, there will be the men’s events and the women’s events. And there are also competitions that will be held on the streets and in the park.
2: Olympic sport climbing
The other relatively new Olympic sport is climbing. Why relatively new? Because climbing was already on the Tokyo 2020 program. Olympic sport climbing has three disciplines: Speed, Bouldering and Lead. Speed is all about the speed of climbing. Bouldering is all about climbing a boulder on a wall and Lead requires the athlete to climb a difficult route 20 meters high. Tactics, insight, agility, strength and endurance are the key skills that athletes need to develop in order to win in this discipline.
3: The unique sport: Olympic surfing
The Olympics will be held in Paris, but what about Olympic surfing? There is one venue that is literally on the other side of the world. The location Teahupoo, on the island of Tahiti, is where Olympic surfing will take place. This island is part of French Polynesia, between Australia and South America.
4: Debut in Paris: Olympic breakdancing
It’s official: breakdancing is the new Olympic sport that will make its debut in Paris in 2024. Only 4 athletes per continent are allowed to compete. From the Netherlands, Menno van Gorp is a contender. He has won the BC One World Final 3 times. He is known for his many signatures and self-invented moves. What is currently the biggest challenge to Olympic breakdancing is the point system. How to establish a grading system without taking away the artistic freedom that makes this discipline so special? The points should be based on creativity and musicality, a gray area that depends a lot on feeling and thus has a lot of subjectivity to it.
