After the first Games of the modern era, held in Greece in tribute to the Ancient Games, the Games of the second Olympiad, were held in Paris. The event takes place over five months, between may and October 1900.
The 1900 Paris Games were built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900, in order to be able to join the event and enjoy the crowds that it attracts, an event at that time was much more important than any of the Games, just renovated. Unfortunately, the name which was most often used to describe the sports activity as a part of this Exhibition sounded like " international physical exercises and sports ". The character of olympic events was so little valued that many spectators and athletes have, for a long time (and sometimes until they died) no idea of the fact that they attended the Olympic Games.
Despite this image, the first Olympic Games held in France represent an important event, because 997 athletes, including the first 22 women in history, from 24 countries took part in 95 events. The British Charlotte Cooper brand history by winning in Paris the first olympic gold medal in individual for a woman, by winning the women's tournament of tennis in singles.
