The intrigue around Oksana Chusovitina's road to a ninth Olympic Games next summer at Paris 2024 continues to grow.
The 48-year-old, who advanced to September's World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, through her performances on vault at the World Cup series earlier this year, is not among a list of women's artistic gymnasts qualified to the event released by the International Gymnastics Federation on Friday (30 June).
The Uzbek gymnast missed out on the all-around berth to the global event at the Asian Gymnastics Championships, which were held 10-18 June in Singapore.
While the 2023 World Championships are the largest Paris 2024 qualifier in artistic gymnastics, Chusovitina's chances to earn a spot at what would be a historic ninth Olympic Games would have been limited to being the top eligible athlete on vault.
She has other opportunities to earn a ticket to Paris, however, including the 2024 Apparatus World Cup series and the 2024 Asian Championships.
The gymnastics legend has said that she would retire following the Olympic Games in Tokyo, but two months later announced that she had resumed training with the goal of winning a medal for Uzbekistan at the Asian Games.
"I want to tell everyone that I have decided to prepare for the Asian Games 2022," she said in an Instagram story announcing her return. "I just can't finish my career without a medal for Uzbekistan."
The Asian Games were subsequently moved to 2023 due to COVID-19 concerns. The new dates, 23 September to 8 October, directly overlap with the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships set for 30 September to 8 October.
